Klassiker - ur amerikanskt perspektiv

Vilka böcker ansess vara klassiker här i USA?

Jag har kollat vad som saluförs i Barnes and Nobles lyxigaste klassiker serie, den läderinbundna. Många titlar har man väntat sig, t ex Hemmingway, Austen och Wilde. Även odödlig litteratur som Shakespeare, Dostoevsky (amerikansk stavning) och Homeros återfinns. Men också modernare klassiker som Stephen King får vara med på finhyllan. Och jag hittade så pass mycket science fiction att det fick bli en egen lista. Nu har jag sorterat ut listan på eget bevåg, så alla kanske inte håller med om kategoriseringen. ;-)

Det finns även en del faktaböcker och Bibeln med i klassikerserien, se längst ned i listan. Även den Amerikanska konstitutionen finns med här. Ett intressant fenomen tycker jag att de tas upp i klassikerformat. Vilka böcker skulle tas upp som svenska faktaklassiker? Knappast grundlagen. Men kanske Linné?

Barn- och ungdomsklassiker har jag helt uteslutit, tänkte skriva ett eget inlägg om detta så småningom.

I huvudsak är det amerikansk och brittisk litteratur på listan. Bara en sydamerikan. Ingen asiatisk eller afrikansk. Några titlar från Europa utanför Storbritannien. Lite snävt kulturperspektiv med tanke på den blandade befolkningen tycker jag.

Några har jag läst för länge sedan, några har jag sett som filmatiseringar, men många återstår att läsa. Jag hoppas att jag kan hinna med någon amerikansk klassiker innan jul, annars finns de ju alltid kvar. Det är ju det som är bra med klassiker.
